Denton, Manchester
Background
Located just a few minutes’ walk from our Denbigh Road and Heanor Avenue development in Denton, Manchester, Oasis Community Resource Centre, is managed and ran by our client, Irwell Valley Homes.
Sitting proudly in the heart of this community, the centre holds regular events, engaging residents with social activities, charity events, work-shops and advice to name just a few. Being such a valuable commodity to this community, it was our absolute pleasure to assist with some much-needed landscaping to enhance the surrounding area.
The Project
Directly outside of the centre lay a tired, unused small plot of land consisting of patches of grass and old benches. Our client wished to enhance this with the development of a memorial garden.
The Aim
The sole aim was to provide a “Garden of Health & Reflection” for the area, somewhere for the local community to not only utilise, but be proud of. Inspired by an employee of Irwell Valley
Homes, who sadly passed away in 2022, the garden was to serve in his memory as a safe haven and place to enjoy nature and wildlife in the area.
The Results
A design for the garden was made, incorporating a circular seating area surrounded by a variety of wildflowers and shrubs.
With community engagement from the offset, our client released a poll for local people to choose their favourite name from a list of suggestions for the garden (name to be revealed on the opening).
All materials and labour were sourced locally by John Southworth with the exception of planting and sowing of seeds for which Irwell Valley themselves, expressed their desire to source. To bring the community together on the project, Irwell Valley would recruit volunteers locally for the planting, with the opening presentation taking place in the coming month.
