It’s National Clean Air Day today, and this is a fantastic opportunity for us to share more about our sustainable approach to building including the techniques we use and our vision for the future here at John Southworth!
“Building Futures Today” is not only our company strapline, but exactly what we have been doing, and what sustainability means to John Southworth’s. Over the last 5 years we have been focused on advancing construction techniques and achievements with a clear target to construct affordable, true Nett zero carbon homes whilst targeting our own business to operate at Nett Zero levels.
In 2021 we completed an exciting scheme delivering twenty-two panelised modular built houses in Beswick, Manchester for social rent. Our Blackrock Street development delivered the UK’s first social housing true nett zero carbon development in the country, following Passivhaus principles, this development consists of highly efficient homes, meeting the Future Homes Standard 2025.
We have constructed over 50 passivhaus homes and worked with the European energy council to trial solar batteries on 10 of our apartments. Sustainability runs well beyond our achievements, and we remain driven to reduce our carbon footprint with a vision of becoming a Nett zero-carbon organisation by 2030.
Sustainability is at the core of our business, and a subject on every aspect of both the company operation and site delivery. It’s not cost driven, whilst we recognise that cost is a factor, and we therefore plan for these initial investments, to ensure key targets are met and key stakeholders make due allowance.
Our journey continues as we seek alternative green products, and invest in greener vehicles, replacing stock with electric alternatives, and we recently refurbished our office, adding extra insulation, improving air tightness, and integrating air source heating.
Having a sustainable workforce is a key aim for John Southworth, and we are proud to offer apprenticeships, encourage women into construction along with providing secure employment which contributes to the local economy.
John Southworth’s have become highly regarded as a leader in both sustainable developments, and new technologies, and remain committed to building futures today. You can learn more about developments here.
